Nats’ Willie Harris Makes ‘Impossible Play’

    By Chris Mottram | May 15, 2008

Willie Harris makes an unreal catch to preserve the Nats 1-0 lead in the 9th:

A double play later, and the Nats win three out of four in Shea. It should also be noted that Pelfrey pitched a no-hitter through six, but was outdone by Bergmann, who went seven scoreless.

(Thanks to Brian from AA for the video.)

      Sweet!

How was the DP to end the game? Gamecast made it seem like either a great play, bad baserunning or both.

Beltran stole second and The Jesus’ throw went into center, allowing Beltran to get to third with one out still. Delgado hit a liner right at Boone, who double off Beltran at third. It was all quite incredible, really.

Man, the Nats and O’s both streak into the Battle of the Beltway this weekend. Should be epic. Not really.

With the game ending DP, I’m still not quite sure what happened. Was that just Beltran’s secondary lead, and he was too far off? Did he think it was on the ground? On a line drive there, there’s no reason to start running- if it’s through you’ll score regardless, if it’s caught you need to get your ass back to the base. Not his finest moment.

Vegas: I was watching at work and me and the dude next to me had the same discussion. There was no reason for Beltran to be that far off the bag. Although it was an extremely low liner, so maybe — like you said — he thought it was going off the ground.

      And then what happened?

Awesome! Bummer that I couldn’t see the game.

Did anyone catch Capt Chaos on The Jime Rome Show this morning? Awesome, totally awesome. Funniest damn thing I’ve heard in a long long time (well since Charles Barkley said he was a dumbass on TV after reading it off the teleprompter)

      1. It wasn’t Buckhantz impossible, but it will do for the Nats.

      2. My head has been spinning since 7 pm last night in anticipation for the 295 showdown.

      3. Or maybe that was just the Jack Daniels in a showdown with Tylenol Extra Strength.

From a Mets fan…it was tremendously bad baserunning. First Reyes trying to go from first to third in a one-run deficit game on a sacrifice bunt (excellent baseball). Awful.

Then, Beltran apparently was instructed to “run on contact” by the notorious mastermind willie randolph (seriously, Mr. Randolph admitted such in post-game press conference). also, by-the-book solid baseball. down a run, man on third, one out. run on contact, carlos. just like they teach in little league…which is about what level Willie is qualified to manage at.
