Bengals Do the Redskins a Favor
By Chris Mottram | April 22, 2008
Dan Snyder and co. continue to not grasp this very basic and simple concept: Draft picks are important. We want to keep them. Especially the ones with “1st” in front of the word “round.” But, of course, they’re still trying to hand them out. They made this completely insane offer to Cincy today, apparently:
The Redskins offered this year’s first round pick, No. 21 overall, and a conditional third rounder in 2009 that could escalate to a first rounder if [Chad] Johnson and the Redskins hit certain performance levels, the sources said.
So clearly, I’m missing something here. First, the Skins offer entirely too much for Chad Johnson — potentially two first round picks — as they’re wont to do. Second, instead of robbing Washington blind, and sending them a player who isn’t going to show up for camp, Cincy turns down the offer. Third, this was reported by Chris Mortenson, so there is about an 83% chance some or all of it isn’t accurate.
We’ve made it clear that we’d love to have Ocho Cinco in D.C. next season. He definitely fills a need for the Skins. But if two first rounders aren’t enough to get Cincy to let him go, then they clearly aren’t bullshitting about their no-trade stance with Johnson.
Update: As suspected, this entire report might be typical Mortenson bullshit. From Bengals.com (thank to The Mayor):
[Marvin] Lewis also denied an ESPN report that the Bengals turned down the Redskins offer of a first-round pick this year and potentially next for Chad Johnson.
Mort, my man, if you wanna make news up, just become a blogger. We do it all the time. It’s what makes our shenanigans cheeky and fun.

This is negotiating 101. Never accept the first offer. I bet Dan ups it to this years 1st, and next yeras second or even first and we get the deal done before draft day.
We dont like anyone at #21, and next years pick will be the last in the first round.
Chad Johnson shoudl be a Redskin by draft day.
Dan always gets his man.

What? You wouldn’t to pay two first rounders for this?

For some reason, Chad’s confusion reminds me of PFC Downey after hearing the verdict in A Few Good Men.

Chad Johnson is the best WR in the NFL right now. He would improve our offense as soon as he steps on the field. TJ Houshwhatever gets his catches and TD’s when CJ gets double teamed, imagine what Moss would do in that position.

too many playmakers, only 1 ball. he once was a funnier version of TO and now he is just like TO. we dont need him. keep the picks and build it up the right way.

This is all fucked up.
Apparantly, Lewis is now saying he got the offer, and declined it.
Looking for a link, stand by one.

maybe they can bring Primetime back and he can play CB for the skins and OF for the Nationals. HA HA. That Milledge guy is like a junior version of Sheffield, only Sheffield was good.
and for my man the mayor, the link my friend.

Mort’s shenanigans are cruel and tragic - evil shenanigans.

The Skins love to give up picks and over pay for wideouts. The Packers dafted Greg Jennings in the 2nd round and James Jones in the 4th rounds respectively. Both have bright futures and more importantly, low cap numbers.
S Moss single covered would do exactly what he did all season, drop balls.
I have always been an Ocho Cinco fan but the way he is crapping on his teammates and Bengals fans is disgusting.

MacG: The only thing that scares me more than trading our first rounder is drafting a WR with it. They want a big, possession receiver, which they can easily get in the later rounds, as you pointed out.
