O’s Keep Winning; Huff’s Having Fun
By Chris Mottram | April 9, 2008
Week one (and then some) clearly goes to the Orioles over the Nationals. The Nats have done nothing but suck since we made a jinx master post about them last week. The O’s, on the other hand, have won six straight and have the best record in the league. Surely, it won’t last, but their numbers prove that their 6-1 record is no fluke.

They’re second in the A.L. in runs (40), OBP (.359), SLG (.474), and AVG (.285), plus dead last in strikeouts (35). Their team ERA is a respectable 3.71 (4th in the league). The starting pitching has been hit or miss, but the bullpen has been totally lights out. They’ve allowed two (2!) runs in 22 innings of work. Plus, Sherrill’s brim is so fresh.
All this has the somewhat maligned Aubrey Huff quite excited:
“We had six [game win streak] last year? It didn’t feel like it. We’re playing good baseball right now. We’re having a great time. This is, hands down, more fun than anytime last year, for sure.”
This probably has something to do with the fact that Huff had the worst season of his career in ‘07, but has started ‘08 with 11 RBI and a .667 SLG.
(Note: The above photo is from the O’s last home game, on Monday, in which Camden saw its second smallest crowd ever: 10, 774.)

I’m just glad to not be the site’s lone jinx master anymore. And I’m also glad the bullpen is doing so well, because they’re gonna need it.

These boys can mash, that’s for sure. It also doesn’t hurt to have A) A bullpen that has arms better than those on the Rockford Peaches, unlike last year’s crew, and B) no more Miguel Tejeda. Between his constant salsa dancing and nonstop ‘roiding in the clubhouse it’s safe to say he was a drain on the team. (Oh yeah, his total lack of range, terrible hands, and bloated contract didn’t help either.)
Starting pitching will be the downfall. But right now these boys are the hottest team in baseball.
