Larranaga Scorns Big East, Stays Put

    By Chris Mottram | April 3, 2008

larranaga2.jpgJimmy Larranaga might be the last honest man left in collegiate athletes. In an age when coaches constantly hang their teams out to dry in favor of “higher profile” jobs (looking in Crean’s general direction), Larranaga has stayed true to his word by turning down such gigs. Yesterday, he proved once again that Fairfax is exactly where he wants to be. For good.

Jim Larranaga agreed to a three-year contract extension yesterday. … The new deal runs through the 2014-15 season. … “I feel very connected to both the George Mason and greater Fairfax County communities. We have enjoyed their great support and it continues to grow. I hope to retire here at George Mason, and this contract extension allows me to do just that.”

The extension comes one day after Providence offered the head coaching job to Larranaga. And just like he did two years ago, when Seton Hall tried to lure him away from Mason, the coach gave a middle finger to the Big East. Although this time his commitment to Mason is even more admirable seeing as he was the captain at Providence during his playing days. That’s a man with conviction. All it took to get me outta Fairfax was the promise of my own cubicle and some Carolina BBQ.

Why don’t you give the real deal behind this story, which is that God Shammgod stalked the living daylights out of him and scared him into signing that extension?
