Caps Win What Was Apparently An Extremely Important Hockey Contest

    By Chris Mottram | April 2, 2008

Yay, it’s time for us to make believe that we care about hockey! I mean, I’d rather see the Caps make the playoffs than not make the playoffs, but before last night’s game against Carolina, I hadn’t really been paying much attention. But now, after their 4-1 victory, they’re tied with the ‘Canes for first in whatever division it is they play in. Both teams have two games left, so hold on to your seats, folks, the NHL is about to get mildly intriguing.

Jamie claims to have watched the entire game, which I know is bullshit because Idol was on during the first two periods, but we were both tuned in in time to see Ovie (that’s what you call Alexander Ovechkin if you wanna sound cool) score his 63rd goal. This tied Luc Robitaille for the most all-time by a left winger. And our man Andy was there to document the insanity:

After the jump, an outstanding glove save from Cristobal Huet. The extent of my knowledge about Huey is that the Caps acquired him via trade this season and he is not Olaf Kolzig, which feels kinda dirty ’cause Olie’s been the goalie in D.C. since I was in middle school.

Ovechkin takes exception to you touching his netminder with your stick, sir!

C’mon, top American designer Michael Kors was in the audience! The Idol audience, I mean. To paraphrase Steinz, it was like worlds colliding. I suppose the same could be said of Ovie clocking Staal.

Also, the Hurricanes site is selling premature playoff tix.

^so is Washington… and every other NHL team that is on the brink of the playoffs.

You sell the guaranteed chance to get playoff tickets with a purchase of the next season’s tickets.

AO going after Staal for that little TAP is retarded. AO is gonna hurt someone some day… and the league is gonna have a hard time making him their poster boy after he breaks someones neck and paralyzes them.

packpigskinfan23, I understand that, but the Canes site is actually setup so that you can’t even get to it without hitting a promo for playoff tix. While on the Caps site I can’t even find mention of playoff tix.

Interesting dichotomy considering neither team is guaranteed a birth and they’re currently tied atop the division.

you may be right there. But I do have to side with the Canes still though(obviously because I am a fan- but logically as well), the tickets went on sale 2 weeks ago when the Hurricanes were sitting pretty on top by themselves and playing great hockey, now they are choking and the Caps are playing great. Carolina still has ALL the tie breakers… so as long as they match what Washington does these next two games, the Canes will still make the playoffs. There is more pressure on the Caps.

Huet(correction from original post) is the difference maker in this Capitals team. If Kolzig was still the #1 goalie, Washington’s season would have been over. The Caps made some great moves at the trade deadline. So did the Canes, and its gonna be and interesting week to see who gets in! MAYBE BOTH- if they win out and get some help.

Pigskinpacker – I don’t see how there is more pressure on the Caps. In mid-December they were the worse team in the league but since then have the 3rd best record in hockey. I believe the pressure is on the team that is choking away their playoff spot.

maybe.. but the Caps need more to happen for them to make the playoffs. They need help from the Canes. The Canes just have to match whatever the Caps do these next 2 games.

The only thing I worry about is Florida throwing the game to the Caps, but playing their best against the Canes… just because their Coach and owner hate the Canes.

with the win tonight the Canes FORCE the Caps to get 3 AT LEAST 3 points in their next two games. The pressure is ON.
