    Nationals Schedule Makes No Sense

    By Chris Mottram | April 1, 2008

phillymayor.jpgNo one around the office gives two shits about the Nats, but despite that everyone seems to be wondering the same thing: WTF is up with the Nats schedule? Here is how the first four days of their season shakes out:

The logic behind this, as far as I can gather, is that MLB needed to pimp out the new Nats stadium to a national audience Sunday night, yet the reigning N.L. East champs deserved to play at home on the real Opening Day yesterday. Fair enough. Although I cannot find any logic whatsoever in giving the teams a day off today.

If the Nats hadn’t started 2-0, we’d totally be using this inconvenient scheduling as an excuse right now. And we still can, and will, if they lose the next two in Philly.

But hey, if nothing else, the Phillies playing on Opening Day gave their city’s mayor the opportunity to show off what a fashion savant he is. Tucked in jersey. Nice touch.

The Nats wanted the Sunday Night Opener and lobbied hard for it.

Typically there is a day-off on the second day of the season in case of a postponement on Opening Day.

Okay, but I’m sure they didn’t lobby for the one game series bit.

As for the day off, there are plenty of teams who played yesterday that are continuing their series today.

No man in a position of power should dress like that.

The one-game opener was obviously an MLB pimping — but these Tuesday off days are solely for the purpose of an early make-up date. The Cards & Yanks were supposed to have off today, but just made up yesterday’s rainouts instead.

The teams that don’t do the day off thing are either warm weather/west coast (Fla, SD, LA, Sea, Oak) or dome’d up (Min).

Now, Mike Nutter’s attire? I can’t explain that.

Dude, you obviously don’t follow baseball very closely.

WFY pointed out the relevant info - Tuesdays after the traditional Monday opener are very often an off day for a lot of teams. Look at the schedule around the league yesterday. Totally common.

MLB had the schedule basically in place that did not include the Nats opening at home. The team lobbied extremely hard to get the Sunday opener, but since the schedule was basically in place they had to find a way to get a team in there to play them for the one game. It was an exception and an anamoly. Don’t go criticizing stuff you don’t understand.

Most likely MLB agreed to the Nats request to host the opener because they felt like they owed Washington a little bit for screwing them over so long and using them as a dangling carrot anytime expansion or relocation was mentioned around the league. Of course it was a bit of a money maker too, but they can make money on any game tagged as the Sunday Night opener.

The place where the Nats DID get totally screwed in the schedule is that every cool holiday through the summer is played on the road. July 4, Father’s Day, Labor Day, my Birthday! Dang it.

Let me say this once and for all — The team that represents the Nation’s Capital, playing the national pastime should have an afternoon home game on July 4 EVERY SINGLE YEAR. Baseball in the nation’s capital on the nation’s birthday is an absolute NO BRAINER!!! Get it right MLB!

Ryan, Kasten said after this year, the Nats will be home for every 4th of July.

No kidding? I missed that. Sweet. Thanks for passing along misschatter.

Also, the Nats wanted the one-game series to use as a sort of test run. If it had been as much a clusterfuck as the opening game at FedEx (then, JKC Stadium) was, they would have some time to fix it before the first home series.
