Beltway Battle: Kevin Millar, O’s Cleanup Hitter vs. Odalis Perez, Nats’ No. 1 Starter

    By Jamie Mottram | April 1, 2008

Nightmare has become reality: Kevin Millar bats cleanup for Baltimore and Odalis Perez is at the top of the rotation for Washington. Each fared well in his team’s opener (a two-run double for Millar and five innings of one-run ball for Perez), but it won’t last as neither has been good since 2004, and they’re both past 30. So, if it was your team, which would be more depressing: Kevin Millar, cleanup hitter or Odalis Perez, No. 1 starter?

The two situations being what they are, I’ve got to say Odalis is worse. At least with Millar, there’s room for good hitters in that lineup. And with Nick Markakis and Brian Roberts, there are. But with Perez taking the bump on Opening Day, it’s a clear and true representation that the Nats’ starting rotation doesn’t include anyone in the general vicinity of good.

So, while there are no winners here, this round of Beltway Battle goes to Baltimore and Mr. Millar. As a bonus to him and his, let’s show off his new tattoo, after the jump:

      Shawn Hill will be back.

Hey, Shawn Hill is a good pitcher. Shawn Hill is also currently hurt and has never thrown 100 innings in a season before.

At least you guys are not SF Giants fans like your boy here. They are predicted to have a worse record than the O’s this year. And we have ZITO as our number 1. Dude cannot throw faster than 84mph.

SF’s Opening Day lineup not only had Zito on the bump but Bengie Molina batting cleanup. Holy moly that’s awful.

For the record, Millar’s “double” yesterday should’ve been ruled an error.

I went to a BoSox/Orioles game in Millar’s first year as an O and sat a few rows from first base. I wanted to punch every drunk sox fan and burn all of the dumb signs they carry to games.

All these chowder heads were loving Millar and screaming “cow boy up” every inning. I finally talked to one of them and asked him if the Sox wanted Millar back? “Hell NO!” was his response.

Even though Odalis sucked for the Royals, having Millar as your 4 hitter is worse.

Well, in reality Zito is the Giants’ third best starter. It won’t matter when they don’t score 600 runs this year, but at least they have something. Kind of like how the O’s have Markakis and Jones and very little else.
