    Orioles Opener < Nationals Opener

    By Chris Mottram | March 31, 2008

As you can tell from the incredibly depressing photo above, there wasn’t exactly a “buzz” around Camden Yards today. You can see just a few fans lingering about in an area — Boog’s BBQ — that is usually rife with activity, especially on Opening Day. The franchise and its fans are completely devoid of the usually hope that defines a new season.

This probably has something to do with the fact that they’re a horrible team, that’s only going to get worse before they get better. They’re destined to finish last in the AL East behind, gasp, the Rays. And Peter Angelos is still the team’s owner. This alone is enough to kill any fan’s hopes.

But, they did indeed play a game today in front of what was officially a sell out, although there were plenty of empty seats (I’m sure it was the weather, yeah, that’s it). The O’s got out to an early lead thanks to Kevin Millar, their clean-up hitter, but ultimately lost 6-2 on the “strength” of Jeremy Guthrie’s five runs over 5 1/3. It’s going to be a sad, sad season north of the beltway, and the stark contrast between the excitement around the Nats and the despair around the O’s will only make things more miserable.

Hey, at least they still have Jay Gibbons though, right? That kid is supposed to have some serious pop.

Whilst I agree with Kogod, I still am obligated by law to dare him to come say that in someone’s face in the Inner Harbor.

Die Angelos is a great tag line. Can I add one? Cokehead Angelos sons have heart attacks
