Dukes, Chief Both Injured Last Night
By Chris Mottram | March 31, 2008
It’s been about 12 hours since the awesomeness of last night’s Zimmerman walk-off, and while we’re still basking in its glow (I have this photo pinned up in the cubicle today), it’s not all happiness.
The team placed Elijah Dukes on the 15-day DL with a strained hammy. He injured it during spring training — see the photo to the right in which he points to the ouchie — and re-aggravated it running out a grounder last night (see, that’s why Bonds never hustled down the line). As for The Chief, well, his injury sounds slightly more worrisome:
Cordero said he felt a “sharp pain” while playing catch before the game. He had a cortisone shot. … “All of a sudden, I just got that pain, and it went down my arm,” Cordero said. “Hopefully, it’s only a couple of days.”
They’re calling it “tendinitis,” but it sounds like the type of thing that could linger for awhile. Sharp pains down ones throwing arm are never a good sign. In the meantime, big Jon Rauch will be shutting the door blowing saves for the Nats. Although, in the interest of full disclosure, I did campaign for Rauch to be our closer instead of Cordero last season, which means one thing: Rauch will suck as a closer.
So, with Dukes and The Hulk (Wily Mo to the layman) out, is there any chance they can throw Da Meat Hook out in left field just to get his bat in the line-up?

Rauch just needs to keep the ball down. Oh, and a catcher who can stop said ball.

I know you were at the game, Maj, so you may not have seen the replay of the passed ball, but there wasn’t much Lo Duca could do. He was set-up outside and the pitch was inside and waaay low. Like, hit-the-dirt low. Could’ve easily been a wild pitch.

There’s not much difference between Cordero and Rauch (Cordero has been a good closer for 3+ seasons though), but losing the Chief would be a huge blow to a team that’s gonna need 3-4 innings/game out of its bullpen.
Also, after an offseason of looking forward to a Wily Mo-Lastings-Austin OF with Elijah coming off the bench, I can’t believe Willie Harris is the starting in LF in Game 2.

While I worry that keeping Meathook on the bench could lead to him roaming the concourses in the early innings, snatching half smokes from unsuspecting passersby, I’d rather that than see him attempt a Daryle Ward impersonation in LF.

I was 90% joking about putting Dmitri in left. How about two first basemen and just have Lastings cover left and center?

If Meathook’s playing left we should be afforded 10 fielders, softball-style.

Jamie, Willie didn’t come in until halfway through the game.
Chris, I seen what i seen.
