Larry Johnson Wears His Sunday Best
By Jamie Mottram | March 12, 2008
The ‘89-90 and ‘90-91 UNLV Runnin’ Rebls were the greatest college hoops team I ever saw, and Grandmama was the leader of the pack. He was a man/elderly woman among boys, as evidenced by the stats on the back of this card. (Also on the back of this card? A shot at Charlotte’s nightlife, sure to be disputed by Chris and various SportingNews.com staffers.)
The shame of it all is that the legacy of those teams is tarnished by point shaving allegations. To that I present Exhibit A: ‘92 Skybox Larry Johnson. Any man dressing like this don’t have no money in his pocket.

That year’s Skybox set is one of my favorites.

The Team USA cards from that set are unsane.

I went to Charlotte in 1993 to watch the Yinka Dare-led Colonials get creamed by the Rasheed/Stackhouse/Montross-led Tarheels. It was a big bus trip, and we all found Charlotte to be the most boring place on Earth. The hotel bar closed at 10 or 11, and we ended up taking a cab across town to find a bar that was open. We promptly got scared of the rednecks at the bar and decided that we just weren’t going to be drunk that night and took a cab back.
I now work for a rather large banking institution based in Charlotte and have to travel there once a month or so. The difference from 10-15 years ago is huge — 100 times more activity and things to do. When I went there the first time, the downtown (Uptown, whatever) looked like “Life After People” most of the time. So the 1992 Larry Johnson had a point. And white jeans.

Do you not see that the basketball is about to spontaneously burst into flames?
LJ and the outfit, were as hot then as they are now. Were it not so, the glowing basketball would’ve told you.

Yes, as Coach Is Killing Me points out, Charlotte has changed incredibly over the past 15 years … or so I’ve been told. In fact, now the city is TOO packed at night. Seriously, every Uptown bar turns into a discotheque Friday-Sunday. This is why I’ve learned that the $10 cab ride to spots just outside the city are well worth it.

This whole page is amazing. GP with hair wearing #2, Luc Longley rookie, and a Glen Rice x Rony Seikaly. Amazing.

In 2003 I had a work related trip to Huntersville. We went to The Joe Gibbs Racing complex to learn about the new Joe Gibbs limited edition truck.
You woudl think the highlight would be metting the Coach and spending three days in a row with him.
It was not.
The Highlight was on the last night there, we went to Charlotte to a strip club and I met Bianca, a Chinese/Nicaraguan mix with a scar on her face.
I have a little red bump that will always remind me of that night.

Mayor, was it the Uptown Cabaret?

I belive the Gentlemans Club. Not quite sure. It was 2003 and I was fucked up.

Somebody’s become a connoisseur of Charlotte-area strip clubs during his non-stalking, non-blogging hours.

I haven’t actually been to the Cabaret, I just happen to work within stalking distance.

Ironically, it is 2008 and I am still fucked up!

It’s obvious Larry Johnson never met Ric Flair during his days in Charlotte.
