Well, it should also be mentioned that I never, ever expect my teams to win anything. Ever. So it's always a surprise when they do, even if they're favored.

Michael Wilbon was not surprised.

Seriously, I want this comment thread to get to 100, or at least 20, so ...

I understand why a MD fan may despise a G-town fan who despises a GW fan, etc., but I'd rather save my hate for NY, Philly and so on. Is it so wrong to root for all the local teams?

I wasn't referring to last night's game as a specifically. I meant getting a spot in the NCAA Tourney was a surprise. I though I made that pretty clear in the post.

VCU was -- in my mind, at least -- the preseason favorite to win the conference, and thus the CAA Tourney. And that was obviously true heading into the conference tourney as well.

See, when something unexpected occurs, it usually qualifies as a surprise.

Hey man, I'm not telling you what to do. Personally, I'm happy to simultaneously beat the drum for UMBC and Mount St. Mary's, which is the same concept. My sense is just that most Terps fans wish ill upon the Hoyas, and vice versa.

But just in case that would threaten to be the last word, how was last night a complete and utter surprise? I think Mason was picked second in the conference, they battled for first place all year, they have two senior starters from a Final Four team and they were 8-point favorites last night against a team that appeared to be starting a Lithuanian and two Jews.

You know I still love you, Chris.

I certainly appreciate you explaining to me how I'm supposed to feel about other schools. I'll promptly start disliking G-Town now.

Let me be more specific with my earlier comments. Maryland was/is my No. 1 team. Then, I went to Mason, so I think it's okay for me to cheer on my alma mater, right?

Beyond those two, I merely wish the other local schools good luck. In other words, if G-Town is on, I hope they win. But I wouldn't say I'm really a Hoya fan -- like I said before, I will root for them, however.

Well I'm willing to keep this up till we reach triple digit comments if you are.

I'm certainly not calling you a bandwagon fan; just a bit wishy-washy. Most of the Gtown and Maryland fans I know have nothing but disdain for each other, a disdain that goes back to the '80s. And it doesn't matter if they don't play against each other, because they sure recruit against each other, which is even more important.

The Mason thing, from the fans I know, is more a pent-up resentment at Gtown and Maryland for sucking up all the local fan and media attention. But there's certainly no love lost between Gary and Larranaga.

As for rooting for all local schools, GW and Georgetown fans despise each other and GW fans constantly belittle AU fans, just to give two examples concerning teams that never play each other.

1. Or, you could root for 20-9 Morgan State and be done with all of it.

2. I'm shocked, SHOCKED that this Larranaga photo isn't stalk-tastic.
