In what is a complete, utter and altogether pleasant surprise, GMU is headed back to the NCAA Tournament.
It was pretty clear throughout the season that this was a team that had to win the CAA tourney to get a bid, and thanks to William & Mary taking down VCU, that goal went from pipe dream to reality over the past few days.
And when I say “thanks to William & Mary” I mean it. Seriously, thank you for taking out the clear-cut best team in the conference so we could beat your lovable, yet ultimately inferior, group of whiteboys. And I don’t say that about the Tribe with hate in my heart. If W&M had been playing anyone other than Mason in the final, I too would’ve jumped aboard the same bandwagon that Will Leitch was a passenger on. As Mr. I’s friends at Gheorghe: The Blog accurately pointed out, this loss tonight does nothing to diminish the amazing run the Tribe put together in Richmond.
So, now I’m stuck feeling the same way I did this time two years ago: just elated that this team is in the Dance at all. If they can win a game or two next weekend, well then, that would be incredible. But, of course, I know better than to say it would be impossible.
Maryland, it’s your turn.
