Please Excuse the Wizards for Sucking
By Jamie Mottram | February 23, 2008
From the AP to FanHouse, LeBron and the Cavs are being lauded for beating the Wizards with just eight players, two of whom were D-Leaguers filling in until the arrival of Ben Wallace, Joe Smith, Wally Sczcerbiak and Delonte West. What goes unmentioned is that Washington played with just nine men, none of whom are named GILBERT ARENAS OR CARON BUTLER.
There’s a reason Washington has lost 10 of their last 11. It’s the same reason they sucked down the stretch and were swept by Cleveland last year. It’s because they, like most teams, are terrible without their two best players. The Cavs beating them with just eight players is no great feat. They were in Cleveland, had LeBron … they should beat a Wizards team that just lost to the Knicks at home.
Really, I’m tired of hearing how bad the Wiz are without hearing why they’re bad. They’re missing Gil. They’re missing Caron. They weren’t world-beaters to begin with. But they still have the sixth-best record in the East, and those guys are expected to be back soon. Hopefully they finish strong and healthy, and then get a fully loaded shot at Cleveland come playoff time.
Update: The good news is that the Wiz got off the schneid with a win over Charlotte. The bad news is that Caron is shutting it down.

Thank you for that. I hate to see my Wiz suffering so much without 50 points per game. That’s what you lose when you lose Gil and Caron.

I thought this team was better without Gilbert. At least that is what media jackasses have been spouting the past few months. Where are those guys now?

MacG, not having Gilbert is huge. Not having Caron may be just as important. To quote Ivan Carter at the Post: “The Wizards are 9-33 in games played without Butler since the 2005-06 season and 3-9 without him this season.”
