JMU Football Is Getting Pretty, Pretty Big
By Jamie Mottram | February 5, 2008
Despite James Madison’s proud football history (Gary Clark! Charles Haley! Ray Finkel Scott Norwood!), the team kinda sucked when I was there. Or maybe it was I that sucked. Either way, I only went to two games, and both were excuses to drink Beam-and-Coke out of a plastic bottle in broad daylight.
A nice thing about the experience, is that the stadium is nestled against a hill on the older half of campus, right between dorms, the dining hall, a bookstore and Lake Newman. Another nice thing is the beautiful co-eds (shout-out to Mrs. Relevant). And yet another is that the program has improved a lot (see: 1-AA championship in ‘04, see also: a one-point playoff loss to eventual champion Appalachian St. this season).
Fueled by that improvement, JMU is expanding the stadium from its current capacity of 15,000 to about 40,000. Which means this program has plans, man, and all those campus landmarks I mentioned are about to be cast in the shadow of a gridiron behemoth:
You smell that? It’s the scent of an aspirational football program outgrowing its humble roots. Down the road, Va. Tech and UVA may be making way for a third football powerhouse in the Commonwealth. And I may have to get down to Harrisonburg for another Saturday, Beam-and-Coke in hand.

Not sure if you saw…but our Dukes are hosting App. St. this year, too. Might be the game to go back and see (tickets on sale Mar. 1).
