Ovechkin Wins the NHL’s Dunk Contest

    By Jamie Mottram | January 27, 2008

In case you weren’t aware, it’s NHL All-Star Weekend and the league has instituted a breakaway contest to spruce things up. It was judged by Dominique Wilkins, Riggins from Friday Night Lights and two other guys, and honors were taken by Washington’s own Alexander Ovechkin, whose finest moments resulted in no goals but plenty of admiration and, eventually, imitation. Check out the first at the 2:35 mark and the second at 4:35:

It says something about the competition that its highlights are failed attempts, but they must be onto something if casual — even Jack Johnson casual — fans like me are paying attention. Either way, cheers to Ovie for continuing to round into the megastar the Caps are banking on him to be.

It’s no different from the NBA. Outside of a sticker dunk, that didn’t win, what are the only memorable moments of the past few years? Nate Robinson sucking and the Birdman sucking.

      1. Jason Richardson was pretty good.

      2. Ovechkin should have worn a Wes Unseld jersey to make his win truly impactful.

Even though I compared the NHL’s Breakaway Contest to the NBA’s Dunk Contest in the headline, I actually think it’s more akin to the D-League’s upcoming Horse Contest. Meaning that some of the finest moments — and most of the moments, really — result in failure.

I also think the Dunk Contest has been pretty good the past few years with Gerald Green, Nate Robinson, Dwight Howard, Josh Smith and Andre Iguodala all putting on good shows.
