Breaking News: Joe Gibbs Steps Down
By Jamie Mottram | January 8, 2008
Not seeing this anywhere just yet, but received via email news alert:
Joe Gibbs will resign as coach and team president of the Washington Redskins, the Associated Press has learned.
Will update as more comes to light, but know that Gibbs 2.0 was a success.
So let the Gregg Williams era begin? If not Gregg, then who?
Update: The Post says “no decision has been made on a replacement.”
Update No. 2: Kissing Suzy Kolber says Gibbs was bad, Williams is worse.
Update No. 3: The Post updates their story to say “Gibbs will stay with the Redskins organization in some capacity, perhaps as a consultant to team owner Dan Snyder.”
Update No. 4: The Bog find this “not unexpected, and entirely classy.”
Update No. 5: Jason La Canfora sees a “blood-letting” in the presser tea leaves. The three outside candidates in the Post’s poll are Bill Cowher, Brian Billick and Jason Garrett.
Update No. 6: Chris’ Sports Blog delivers a 1,750-word post about Gibbs, and it’s the best thing I’ve read all day. Cheers.

Just another sad day, in a another sad season as a Washington Redskin fan.
Paging Bill Cowher.

Les Miles?
Gregg Williams would be great. He got a raw deal at Buffalo imho.
Although The Brian is available…I could see Snyder falling for him. Or Tom Cruise.

Youse guys have a different definition of success than we do.
January 8th, 2008 at 10:27 am
One of the KSK bloggers is a Pro- Steeler and Anti-Redskin fan.
That guy doesnt know jack.

MattP700, it’s funny hearing that from the fan of a franchise that’s never won a Super Bowl. Anyway, the success I’m referring to is making the playoffs twice in four seasons. Viewed through the lens of only making it once during his 11-year absence, his second time around was ultimately successful.

Sigh. Remember all that back-and-forth yesterday about consistency under Gibbs and how it’s good that the front office won’t retool everything now? Well, uh, forget it.
This sucks. Not that I think Gibbs was the greatest or anything, but I just want to see my favorite team without turmoil for more than 2 seasons in a row.
I guess Gregg would be better than no one if it allows the team to keep the same playbook on either side of the ball, and the bulk of the coaching staff intact. I guess.
January 8th, 2008 at 10:33 am
Also, hope that Gibbs stays with the team in some capacity. It won’t necessarily be an enormous loss since he delegated so much to Saunders/Williams anyway. But to have him around the front office keeping guys together and inspiring them from there would be a major, major help.
January 8th, 2008 at 10:39 am
Trust me, we’re not trumpeting our successes in Philly. You gotta know that…
Duly noted on the Gibbs turnaround though.

Mayor, that’s your friend Christmas Ape. I think we’re all familiar with your feelings.
So how does Russ Grimm make everybody feel?
January 8th, 2008 at 10:57 am
I like Russ. Lord knows this team needs o-line help.
but again, could Danny keep the coordinators consistent if he brought in Grimm? This would really set Campbell back if he has to learn a new playbook, and the defense would be hurt with Williams leaving too.
January 8th, 2008 at 11:01 am
We need a proven Head Coach.
I have narrowed it down to three choices.
Bill Cowher
Gregg Williams
Mike Martz
Honestly I would love to see Marty ball back in DC. But that would mean Vinny would have to take another vacation.
I would put big money on Cowher.
January 8th, 2008 at 11:02 am
Campbell played in four systems in four years in college. I’m sure he could pick up any offense that doesn’t have some asinine playbook that’s longer than a Dickens novel.
January 8th, 2008 at 11:03 am
I don’t want to see a lot of turnover, but the idea of Gregg Williams in control scares the everliving shit out of me.
January 8th, 2008 at 11:06 am
Gibbs is stepping down as president according to the radio. The skins press release used the term “special advisor.”
Any chance of getting Cowher and Grimm? I’m greedy.
January 8th, 2008 at 11:08 am
I’m not saying that Gregg is the be all, end all of coaches, but the players seem to like his schemes and playing for him. But yeah, ultimate control makes me nervous.
I’d rank my preferences as: Grimm, Williams, Cowher, the field.
January 8th, 2008 at 11:12 am
“big money on Cowher” is aggressive. Almost as aggressive as listing him third. Although to be fair, it is reasonably close to his “home”, so when you guys chase him off in three or four years he can just come back and coach NC State.
/desperately praying
January 8th, 2008 at 11:15 am
Cowher as HC.
Grimm as OC
??? as DC, cause Williams will be gone.
Now do we interview Ray Rhodes or Terry Robiskie before we sign Cowher up?
January 8th, 2008 at 11:21 am
If the Mayor had it his way Richie Pettibone would be running the defense.
January 8th, 2008 at 11:35 am
Haha. I read your Blog UM. Good stuff. Just keep that Steeler fan away from everything Redskins, unless of course its about the DTC.
January 8th, 2008 at 11:38 am
Cohwer said he is not ready to coach yet and that he wants 2 years away from football. Williams would not be a good fit, now would Saunders. The problem is that when Gibbs brought those two in, he gave them each a clause in their contract for $1 million if they were not Gibbs predecesor. So as skins fans we are either stuck with Williams or Saunders, or the possibility of a frist time coach.
The other issue here is how is this team going to move forward. These guys just went thru a horrid seasaon with some success and they all credited Gibbs with getting them there. How will they handle a coaching change? How will the FA’s react? Will they re-sign or go else where? Here are my candidates for coach:
1) Russ Grimm-See my comments yesterday about the counter tre.
2) Doug Williams-He was coach at Grambling and a Redskin legend
3) Jason Garrett-Just to stick it to that other team
Ok, so I really don’t have any candidates after #1.
January 8th, 2008 at 11:38 am
T-Robe! I miss him so. Glad to see Pettibone get a mention as well.
January 8th, 2008 at 11:44 am
la Canfora’s latest post quotes Randle-El as saying that he (and most of the team on both sides of the ball) wants Williams. I think it doesn’t kill them to give him 1-2 years and see what happens. I’ll put him above Grimm on my depth chart for now.
January 8th, 2008 at 11:46 am
Dare I suggest it?
Darrell Green?
January 8th, 2008 at 11:51 am
i thought about green as well, but he has no coaching expierience. and that would dimminish his legendry. they could bring him in as a assistan coach.
also, is there a chance of Gibbs being in one of those Coors Light commercials?
January 8th, 2008 at 11:54 am
one more thing. I need some advice. i just finished my 2007 season on Madden 08 and am now in the 2008 training camp. I resigned Williams and Saunders as cordinators. Do I need to fire coach now or let it ride out? if i fire gibbs, should I hire grimm and see how it works out?
January 8th, 2008 at 11:54 am
We might interview DG as a minority canidate.
Him or Doug Williams.
Who was the minority canidate we interviewed for teh Joe Gibbs hire. I cant recall one.
January 8th, 2008 at 11:55 am
Dude. Just make sure you save your roster with ST on it!

Apparntly, if we hire within, the Rooney rule does not and will not apply.
January 8th, 2008 at 12:21 pm
If Gregg Williams is the coach, I hope he hires Brian Billick. Can you imagine having the 2 guys who invented the game of tackle football on one staff?
January 8th, 2008 at 12:46 pm
Two words.
Brian Billick.
January 8th, 2008 at 12:56 pm
Someone actually called Gregggggg a proven head coach? Have fun with that. He made Mike Mularkey look like Joe Gibbs 1.0. You might want to invest in a backup punter or two.
January 8th, 2008 at 1:14 pm
I don’t want Doug Williams as a coach, but I’d kill to have him named GM (or whatever the fuck Danny wants to call it).
January 8th, 2008 at 3:00 pm
Russ Grimm makes me feel all warm and fuzzy …
January 8th, 2008 at 4:51 pm
As I watch the press conf right now, I think that this era of gibbs in DC, it will have brought stability. Before he arrived, The Dan was a fantasy football owner, over paying for players who were past their prime and not worth the money. Firing coaches, staff, etc… Now, in my opinion, I feel that with Gibbs around the last 4 years, he has gorwn as a owner and may know what it takes to win now. When the Redksins are dominate again, this might be the era or time we look back on and say, this is when it changed.

I’m going to be pissed next year when he’s on pit row, winning the Nextel Cup or whatever those nascar guys race for.
