In the End, the Redskins Got Out Classed

    By Jamie Mottram | January 6, 2008

From 5-11 laughingstock to 9-7 Wild Card, today’s bleak but the future’s bright. Joe Gibbs 2.0 is still a success, and Seattle’s gonna give Green Bay all it can handle.

Outclassed is for boxers. The Redskins did all they could to give ST21 an appropriate send off, and the NFL its best feel-good story of the last 10 years.

      Skins showed some heart.

Yeah, don’t get me wrong, the team’s resurgence was and is very impressive. Seattle was just the superior team for about 55 of the 60 minutes on Saturday.

“Joe Gibbs 2.0 is still a success”

If mediocrity is success, I guess you’re right.

You’ve got a point, onside kick, seeing as how the Skins actually have a losing record during Gibbs 2.0, but I beg to differ.

They’ve made the playoffs twice during these four years, which is better than average (all things being equal, the average NFL team makes the playoffs 1.5 every four years). And when you consider that the Skins only made the playoffs once during Gibbs’ 11-year absence, it’s way better than average.

onside kick likes the Falcons. he alse deserves a onside kick in the area where his package used to be.

I think Gibbs 2.0 is more about inconsistency than mediocrity. If the two are mutually exclusive. The playoff run in ‘04 was done with a 5 game winning streak to end the year, as this year’s was done with a 4 game streak. If these guys could just keep it going for more than 2 games in a row, you could have a 10-win team year in, year out.

LBF, that’s a great point about consistency. Even during the two playoff seasons, this team pushed fans to the brink (5-6 in ‘05, 5-7 in ‘07) before making a run.

The other good thing is that it seems the front office is learning that they don’t have to retool the roster every year. If they keep everyone around into next season (within reason), that helps build consistency that they need.

LBF makes a great pint about not retooling. But that may not be the case this year. They are $20 million over the cap and Shawn Springs is a free agent. They asked him to resign for a little less and he said no. Now with Portis saying he will restructure his deal, that might help. They need to restructure Brunell’s deal becasue I believe most of his $56 million are due in the back half of his contract. If they don’t, we can see alot of guys who go bye bye. I also have a feeling that “The Dan” might throw a ton of money at DeAngelo Hall (god I hope not, he represents everything that Darrell Green wasn’t). This team looks good on the oside of the ball. Should be able to run and score if the o line stays healthy. The d side scares me a little. especially if springs goes and they dont resign anyone or the sign hall (bad influence and immature) to replace.

Agree with everything written, but let me throw this one out there, just for kicks.

Chances that Snyder takes a shot at Randy Moss in the offseason? Don’t forget, he’s a free agent since he only signed a 1-year deal with the Pats. I’m not hoping for this to happen, but it’s out there not being discussed.

For Steinz’ well-being, I hope that they re-sign Rock, who’s a FA too. Springs sounds gone, but most of the other skill guys are hanging around at this point. Not sure Smoot is a #1 CB and Hall makes me nervous as hell, too. I think Asante Samuel is on a 1-year franchise tag contract, so he might be available.

Lots and lots of contract restructuring gonna happen this offseason.

If Carlos Rogers returns to good health, we should be fine at CB, even if Springs departs.

The skins have won 1 wildcard playoff game in 4 years. Granted that is better than Parcells stint in Dallas, but I do not want to puchase wild card playoff shirts. Gibbs inability to acquire dominant offensive lineman is a mystery. How did he forget that the o-line built his legacy in the 1980’s?

      @stuscottslazyeye

I’ve attended 3 NFC championsip games included Dallas in ‘83. I attend Super Bowl XVIII in Tampa. My dad told me to “shutup and enjoy halftime” while I cried after Jack Squirek’s interception for a TD. I atttended Super Bowl XXVI. After each redskin score the metrodome would play Hail to the Redskins. My dad turned to the adjacent Bills section and yelled “you have to the words by now” after going up 37-10. I have missed one home game at Fed Ex since 1999. I sit in Section 215. I love the Redskins.

Onside: I would just argue that injuries have decimated the o-line this year and in the past. You can argue that they have to get younger, which I’d agree with, but I’m not sure there’s a talent vacuum there.

Eventually, Samuels and Jansen will need to be replaced, and at this point, Alexander might become the best guard they have on offense (if they can pry him away from Greggggg.)

*”you have to know the words by now”

Randy Thomas’ injury was a huge blow, he could dominate the line of scrimmage. Randy is 32 years old. The rest of the line is adequate and old. Rabach and Kendall had miserable games against the Seahawks.

The only problem with Gibbs 2.0 that I see is that he become a product manager and not a coach. He hired high price cordinators on both sides of the ball. One of them has done a good job on the d side, but the other guy who has a “War and Peace” playbook is ridiculous. Gibbs is a HOF coach who built great offenses, Saunders is a Mike Martz type cordinator who does not fit into what is Redskins football, let alone NFC East football. What happened to the counter tre? This was a staple of Gibbs v1, now from what I can tell, they hardly run this. The teams that were under Coach Gibbs in the past had a attitude about them. They didn’ care who was on the other side of the ball, they were gonna run and run and run some more. Now it is a finess team. And finess does not win in the NFC East.

This offseason will be a success if we don’t make a deal with the Jets again. I am getting tired of trading with them. As for signing Moss, that better not happen. If you translate the word Moss, it is Middle Greek Eastern Korean for sorry ass quitter.
