    Brian Roberts Deserves Better

    By Chris Mottram | December 14, 2007

roberts.jpgOf all the names mentioned in the Report, none is more surprising than Brian Roberts.

I suppose Roger Clemens is the biggest name that we didn’t already know did ‘roids, but you could totally see that coming. He was supposed to be in the “twilight of his career” when he left Boston, and has won five Cy Young’s since.

But B-Rob is probably the last guy anyone would suspect (other than maybe Nook Logan). And the evidence — or lack thereof — against the Orioles best player is laughable. Unless you’re Roberts, in which case it’s embarrassing at best, criminal at worst. From the Sun:

Let’s travel together to Page 158, where we learn that Roberts was friends with former Orioles outfielder Larry Bigbie. We learn that during the 2001 season, Bigbie and Roberts, both rookies at the time, lived in the home of David Segui, who has readily admitted to using steroids and human growth hormone.

Here’s the compelling evidence against Roberts:

“When Bigbie and Segui used steroids in the house, Roberts did not participate,” the report states. “According to Bigbie, however, in 2004 Roberts admitted to him that he had injected himself once or twice with steroids in 2003. Until this admission, Bigbie had never suspected Roberts of using steroids.”

    That’s it.

That “evidence” shouldn’t hold up in schoolyard gossip circles, let alone in the most damning document in the history of the game. Considering how reckless some of the finger-pointing is, the Mitchell Report may have done more harm than good.

And while we’re here, how is B-Rob in there but Brady Anderson is no where to be found?

I’ve seen the argument saying B-Rob’s usage is obvious b/c his HR totals jumped from single to double digits before and after his alleged steroid use. But, looking at the date mentioned here (2003) vs. his production, that doesn’t hold up as he only hit 4 HR in ‘04 before jumping up to the 10-18 range in ‘05-07.

Guys, is really he referred to as B-Rob?

You think I could just make up a nickname that awesome? Of course he’s known as B-Rob.

It’s spiraling out of control. I guess seeing H-Mat in the NY Post is right around the corner.

Bernard Hopkins thinks this is a travashamockery of a decent and noble sport, but believes he has a monopoly on all nicknames closely resembling B-Hop.

now that B-Rob has been put in the mitchell report, MacPhail can’t try to hold someone ransom for 5 prospects

If we can’t go with B-Rob, I’ll go with Bob Roberts (after the Beatles song ‘Doctor Robert).

Sad but true. At least he can admit a mistake. I’m still a fan.
