Nationals Continue to Show Committment to Winning by Signing Aaron Boone

    By Chris Mottram | December 6, 2007

boone_home_run.jpgThe Nationals signed Aaron “Bleeping” Boone to a one-year deal today. This is completely and utterly not, in and of itself, newsworthy. But what piqued my interest was the first paragraph of the story about this — and other Nats’ moves — on MLB.com:

The Nationals continue to show how much they want to win in 2008. They signed infielder Aaron Boone to a one year, $1 million contract, and Ryan Langerhans to a one-year, $500,000 contract.

That’s sarcasm, right? Because certainly no one would ever consider signing Boone and Langerhans as proof that a franchise wants to win. These two studs have a combined .249 BA for their careers, which is significantly higher than the .167 Langerhans batted last season.

Take note, we wanna win so bad in ‘08 that we’re willing to sign pinch hitters. What does that do, N.L. East, does that blow your mind? That just happened!

Bill Ladson of MLB.com is one of the great comedy writers of this (or any) generation.

Jon Lovitz ghost wrote that article.

No if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go watch three episodes of ‘The Critic’ on DVD.

Ah, NTPNate, the grammar police commenter. Every site needs at least one of you.

Their goal is to shame the rest of the NL East into losing. I mean, could you really live with yourself if you gave up a hit to Aaron Boone?
