Welcome to Washington, Elijah
By Jamie Mottram | December 3, 2007

Elijah Dukes is a Washington National. And I ain’t even bullsh—in’, dawg:
Stan Kasten and Jim Bowden had an off-site meeting this morning at a hotel near the airport with Elijah Dukes. Also present, according to the source, was Dmitri Young, who has some personal knowledge of Dukes because his younger brother Delmon was with Dukes in Tampa. … The buzz does not seem to be that the Nats will be giving up anything of significant value. This is a “take-a-troubled-player-off-the-hands-of-another-team” deal, it seems.
This deal, combined with the trade for Milledge and our preexisting man love for Dmitri and Wily Mo, makes the Nats imminently blogable, if not better. Oh right, and Austin Kearns. That guy is a kaleidescope of personality.
Update: The Dugout has a funny take on this. Jeff Passan’s isn’t bad either.

onside kick, yeah, there’s that. There’s also the dilemma of a crowded outfield, unless Bowden’s looking to flip Milledge for pitching.

If nothing else, I think it’s good that Dukes is out of Tampa. Considering he grew up in Hilsborough County, I’ve got to imagine getting away from some of the bad influences in his life that have been around since childhood could help him mature as a person and a player.
I’ve always found it odd that Dukes, Gary Sheffield and Carl Everett all went to the same high school. They must traffic in crazy.

The Nats must have the lock on biggest loonie outfield

They definitely have a lock on the weirdest named outfielders in MLB now. Nook, Elijah, Willy Mo, Lastings, that’s why Church had to go, Ryan is just too tame.

Between Milledge and Dukes, DC Police ought to build substations outside of Love, H20, and Ben’s Chili Bowl.
