    Welcome to Washington, Lastings

    By Chris Mottram | November 30, 2007

In the rare “intra-division” trade, the Nats dealt Ryan Church and Brian Schneider to the Mets today for Lastings Milledge.

Trading Schneider is no surprise, seeing as the Nats have the Jesus (who they also took from the Mets) ready to become an everyday player, but I never saw the Milledge thing coming. Probably because I haven’t been paying any attention to baseball. The extent of my knowledge about him is that Mets fans love him, he’s “gangsta” (see photo), he could be a 30 HR/100 RBI guy, and he has an illegitimate child, who was born in 1895 and his name is Babe Ruth.

Oh, and Lastings Milledge can tell the difference between diet and regular Dr. Pepper.

I’ll admit that seeing Church and Schneider go hurts a bit. Church is a sweet swinging lefty, who seems ready to have the always elusive “breakout season” any time now, and Schneider was, as much as anyone, the face of the Nationals (I realize that doesn’t mean much). But between Wily Mo, Lastings and Dmitri, the Nats could possibly have the best group of personalities in baseball. Now, if they could win 90 games, that would be nice. I suppose if you’re gonna be a losing team, you might as well be enjoyable to root for.

Millings seemed to have had loads of potential but could never produce consistently over a period of time. He also has a rap album (I’m sure it sucks)

Personality aside, that’s a fleecing. Milledge has as much potential as any player in the NL East, maybe even the NL; Church and Schneider are … Church and Schneider. Be happy.

Wasn’t it just a year ago that Milledge was the centerpiece of a package that would have brought Manny Ramirez to the Mets had he not backed off his annual trade demands? Now he’s being traded for the blissfully mediocre, not to mention anti-semetic, Ryan Church? Really? This seems to be a boon for the Gnats both on and off the field.

Here’s a link to Church’s comments on Jews, just to be clear that I’m not throwing out unfounded slander.

I hereby declare that Lastings Milledge is a dead-on ringer for a young James Brown. (The singer, not the T.V. host)

I’d say he looks a little more Venus Williams than James Brown.

And an A+ for his broad’s Zubaz dress. Well played, ladyfriend.

Not that it matters with the new ballpark, but Lastings has a .414 career OPS in the nation’s capital.

This was still an unbelievable steal. I’m still trying to fathom what Minaya was thinking. Delmon Young, a player with similar upside and character issues, fetched a quality mid-rotation cost-controlled starter, a starting shortstop and a high-ceiling bullpen arm in return.

Yeah, this is a pretty ridiculous fleecing of the Mets. Which is nice.
