Vinny T Is Walking on Dangerous Ground
By Chris Mottram | November 16, 2007
Vinny Testaverde apparently fancies himself as some kind of expert on longevity in athletics. I assume it’s because he’s 44, and is still managing to toe the line between “lovable loser” and “hatable loser” (note: not an actual word) by playing for a second-rate football team, but I’d recommend he keep Cal Ripken’s name out his mouf.
When asked about Brett Favre’s 246 consecutive starts vs. Cal’s Streak, Vinny had this to say:
“It’s one record that I think will never be broken, and it’s one record that I think will never be touched in any sport. You can compare it to other sports, like baseball with Cal (Ripken), but I think this even surpasses that.”
Alright, I’m willing to concede that playing in 246 football games without breaking your gunslinger is physically more impressive than Cal’s 2,632 consecutive games. But given the context in which the two events occurred, Cal’s milestone is far more important. He saved the game so that years later guys like Jonathan Papelbon could make us wish he handn’t.
And for those of you — like Mr. Mittens (the blog, not the man) — who think Cal “held onto his career a tad bit too long,” well, you can just go F yourself. Look at the numbers. His production never really dropped off, and beyond just the stats, he was the only reason O’s fans had to make it out to Camden.

I can’t help it, I still love Vinny T. Probably b/c he once threw 35 INTs in a season, but also because he’s managed to play so long with only two good years to his credit.

I love Vinny T because his exploits at Da U live forever on youtube.

I actually dislike Vinny T. If only because of his seeming determination to make my blog…irrelevant.

By ‘exploits at Da U’ do you mean his 5 INT, 0 TD national championship game?

Vinny was the last good QB that the Ravens had and probably because genius Billick was not the coach.
Mister Mittens might need to find another washed up number one pick QB to write about. Alex Smith have nickname yet besides, shell shocked?
