Meet Houston’s Travis Johnson, the Worst Human on the Planet
By Chris Mottram | October 7, 2007
As you surely know by now, Trent Green was once again knocked out during today’s game. Thanks to AA, the hit looked a little something like this:
Clearly, a scary moment as Green was completely motionless on the field. While he was unconscious, Travis Johnson (the guy Green blocked on the play) stood over Green and taunted him, drawing a 15-yard penalty. Yes, he was taunting a man who may have just suffered a career ending injury. Shitty, heat-of-the-moment mistake from Johnson, right? Wrong:
Johnson was furious later, accusing Green of blocking him at the knees on purpose. “The bottom line is, it was a malicious hit. It was uncalled for,” Johnson said. “He’s like the scarecrow. He wants to get courage while I wasn’t looking, and hit me in my knee instead of trying to hit me in my head. God don’t like ugly, you know what I mean? My knee ain’t never hurt like it hurt today. If you want to hit me, hit me in my head, hit me in my chest, don’t hit me in my knee. I’m trying to eat just like everybody else. So, to hit me like that, that showed me what type of man he was.”
I’ve seen the Wizard of Oz countless times, and even totally sober once. I’m fairly certain the Scarecrow did not try to get courage by legally blocking a 350-pound lineman. So to summarize, no Mr. Johnson, no one has any clue what you mean. You should be taken out back and shot in both kneecaps, you amazing douchebag.
Seriously, this is worse than killing dogs.
Update: Upon further review, the Scarecrow actually wanted a brain in Oz, so he wasn’t after courage at all. That would be the lion.

You couldn’t be more wrong. Green attempts a dirty chop block on Johnson and it backfires and knock himself out. Granted quarterbacks aren’t known for their expert tackling, but ignorance isn’t bliss in the NFL. Johnson is incredibly lucky he wasn’t seriously injured. The taunting was immature, and hurt Johnson’s cause and credibility. The simple truth is its very unfortunate Green got hurt, but its not at all surprising considering the level of ignorance he showed.

I take personal offense to the title of this blog post.

I watched that video two or three times, and honestly I was surprised that Johnson wasn’t the one hurt on the play. It was a nasty block, and I don’t blame him for being upset. Taunting was probably a step over the line, but you’ve only got two knees.

Assuming at the time he didn’t know he was unconscious, I wouldn’t rush that quickly to such a harsh judgment.
That being said, Trent Green is the new Troy Aikman when it comes to concussions. See you in the booth, homey.

“Dirty chop block”? “Nasty block”? Are you guys being for serious? Have you ever seen a block from QB where he didn’t go for the legs? How the fuck else is a QB supposed to take out a man 100+ pounds heavier than him? It was perfectly legal, homeboys.

i’ve gone back and forth on this one after hearing more about the whole hullaballou this morning. i played football in high school and a bit in college…at one point, i actually thought i might side with johnson on SOME of his comments. rationale was…hey, it’s a career where your body is your biggest asset and green could’ve easily destroyed his knee on what many who apply to the “ethics” of professional football COULD argue was a bit cheap.
But, in the end, here’s where i netted out. there are no ethics in this game. Football is a brutal, vicious sport. how many times have you heard players talk about their desire to, literally, kill a player on an opposing team? it’s a physical game. anything that takes place between the lines that doesn’t draw a flag (which an increasingly small number of things) simply cannot be criticized.
i’m sick of the fact you can’t hit the quarterback anymore…go headhunting on a receiver crossing the middle or blindside someone on a crackback block. i mean it’s FOOTBALL. Isn’t it?

If you think that was a dirty block then you definitely don’t know much about football. Jerome Bettis put it best when he said “You cannot expect a Quarterback to block a Defensive Tackle standing up.” Travis Johnson weighs over 100 lbs more than Trent Green and it would be foolish for anyone to think he stood a chance toe-to-toe. If you even watch football occasionally you would see at least 25-30 chop blocks a game. Running Backs, Tight Ends, Wide Receivers, and Fullbacks do it nearly every play. Also, taunting a man while he is motionless and quite possibly could have broken his neck is despicable. A concussion was the least dangerous thing that could have happened there and it is still very serious. Travis Johnson should be fined and maybe even suspended for his actions.
