Maryland’s New QB Is a Rutgers Slayer, Son of a Heavy Metal Drummer

    By Jamie Mottram | October 2, 2007

chris-turner.jpgThe Terps offense floundered through four-plus games and was locked up on the road with No. 10-ranked Rutgers when QB1 Jordan Steffy came out with a shoulder and concussion. Then Chris Turner came in and led the Terps to victory — despite Duke’s best efforts — and posted fine numbers (14-for-20, 149 yards, one TD). So while Ralph Friedgen isn’t saying that he’s Maryland’s new starting quarterback, I will.

But who is this kid? Well, he’s not only a sophomore from California with an excellent head of hair, but he’s also the son of Ratt’s original drummer, John Turner. And if you’re not familiar with Ratt, then you obviously didn’t rock hard enough in the ’80s. For a primer, here’s the video for their 1984 smash hit, ‘Round and Round.’

Turner’s heavy metal (glam metal?) pedigree isn’t the only lineage he’s dealing with, however. There’s also the matter of Maryland being a bit of a Quarterback U. in recent decades … just look at that mural! At 6′3″, 214 and with one killer performance under his belt, he could be on his way. To that end, the Terps’ schedule gives him time to figure it out (home dates vs. Ga. Tech, UVA and Clemson followed by a trip to UNC and a visit from BC).

And while we’re here, Saturday was a banner day for ACC football, what with Maryland beating Rutgers, FSU topping Alabama and UVA stomping Pitt. Like the groundskeeper said in Major League, “Maybe these guys aren’t so shitty after all.”

Update: Littles shares a poster commemorating this game and calls Turner “the future at QB for the Terps.”

Update No. 2: Turtle Waxing has good insight on Turner vs. Steffy.
