Marc Ecko May Destroy $750K Bonds Ball
By Chris Mottram | September 17, 2007
Barry Bonds’ 756th home run ball sold at auction yesterday for over $750,000, which is about $250,000 more than it was supposed to go for. The lucky winner? Fashion designer Marc Ecko. On The Today Show this morning, Ecko announced that he plans to give the ball back to the public by allowing all of us (who have internet access) to vote on what to do with No. 756:
“I wanted the ball to democratize the ball and to give the ball to the people, to give the ball to America … I thought it would be interesting to have a pop culture moment together.”
So at vote756.com you can decide what should be done with it. The options are “bestow it” (send it to the Hall as is), “brand it” (burn an asterisk into the ball and then send it to the Hall), or “banish it” (send the ball into orbit via a rocket). Ecko admitted to voting for branding the ball, which I think is a great idea.
Either way, this guy has way, way too much money on his hands, although I do appreciate what he’s trying to do here. I don’t think we’ve all had a pop culture moment together since Pedro got Puck kicked out of the San Fran Real World house.

Sean John Combs seethes that he didn’t conjure up this marketing ploy first.
