Those Marlins Fans Are Diehard
By Chris Mottram | September 13, 2007
Mr. Brown Sports reported a couple days ago that there were about 200 fans watching the Marlins-Nationals game on Monday night. Well, yesterday it got even more pathetic. A season ticket holder was thrown out of the game by the home plate ump for heckling:
In the fifth inning, home plate umpire Paul Schreiber gave the thumb to an unnamed man seated behind the plate who had been verbally abusive throughout the contest. … The man was so loud, and the atmosphere so quiet, the fan could be heard saying “you don’t make more than me” on the television broadcast as he was forced to leave. There were no more than about 400 fans in attendance at the game’s peak
Because I have absolutely nothing better to do, I was watching the thrilling 12-inning game yesterday afternoon. I took this screen grab in the bottom of the 12th (click to see larger):
I counted no more than 20 fans in those three sections. Behind the dugout. Up the thirdbase line. Nats’ play-by-play man Bob Carpenter said he counted a total of 13 fans in all of the outfield sections combined. Mexico City Marlins has a ring to it, no?
Head over to Nationals Enquirer for perhaps more telling photo of the electric atmosphere in Miami.

LeBatard has been killing the Marlins/Marlins fans for this all day on his show.

Great photo. I saw that the announced crowd was 10,000 something, but the reality doesn’t seem to bear that out. Really pathetic for a Major League Baseball game, regardless of who is playing and where.
