Scott Van Pelt Style Interviews Namesake
By Chris Mottram | September 10, 2007

In an age when Sportcenter is almost unwatchable, Scott Van Pelt remains the most — and perhaps only — likable anchor on the program. I’m probably slightly bias because he’s a Terp and although I’m a Patriot, I do love me some Maryland. One of SVP’s fellow Terps has a sports blog appropriately named “Scott Van Pelt Style.” The site’s author, Jarrett (who is a fine commenter here on Mr. I as well), had the chance to interview the real SVP. The results are both informative and entertaining. For example:
SVP Style: How do you approach being entertaining but not overdoing it in your work?
Van Pelt: I find myself doing less and less of what might be called catch phrases because I find them less and less necessary. I will drop in lines from things I enjoy. Flight of the Conchords, a rap group, whatever…but I try to use them sparingly because, like sugar, a little is sweet but too much just makes you want to vomit.
I wonder if Van Pelt has ever considered telling Chris Berman this valuable bit of advice. Speaking of Berman, SVP apparently knows what he looks like naked. Sexy.
Update: SVP Style informs me that he actually went to Morgan State, not Maryland. My bad.

And he listens to go-go?
I didn’t even like go-go until I went away to college and turned to it to escape Baltimore club music.
SVP reps hard for the hometown, and it was my privilege to ask him a few.

I’ve never heard him quote Conchords, though I don’t watch must SportsCenter. In a related note, I do reference the Hiphoppopotamus in tonight’s Blog Show.

SVP says “It’s business time!” when guys hit big homer runs or whatnot.

And if a player named “Murray” is featured in a highlight there’s a decent chance you’ll hear the words “present” or “jest”
