Terps QB Cheating Scandal Surrounding Clinton Portis’ Cuz Gets Weird

Josh Portis, the Florida transfer and back-up qaurterback for Maryland, was suspended for the season before the Terps opener against Villanova on Saturday. The entire incident surrounding Portis, who was most likely going to take over the starting role at some point this season, is just plain odd.
Portis (yes, he is really related to Clinton) was suspended for cheating on a pop quiz that, from my understanding, took place during last spring semester (as opposed to during summer semester, as I think was originally assumed). It’s strange then that he was given the chance to compete throughout camp this summer against Jordan Steffy for the starting QB spot. There was no knowledge whatsoever of cheating allegations against Portis all summer, and the first anyone seemed to hear of it was about 30 minutes before the season opener when the announcement was made that Portis was ineligible for the season. None of that makes much sense to me, unless either Coach Fridge knew nothing of the cheating allegations, or he assumed Portis would be cleared, hence allowing him to compete for the starting job.
That’s just the start of a far more intricate and somewhat puzzling story, however. Jeff Quinton at Inside Charm City has done an amazing job trying to make sense of it all, including information from the man who Portis allegedly cheated off of, Portis’ mother and much more.
