    Cole Hamels Disrespects Philly Fans

    By Chris Mottram | August 31, 2007

Michael Milici, who happens to be one of about two people I know from Philly who I don’t want to kill, went where no blogger has gone before. He interviewed pitching stud and all around dreamboat Cole Hamels over at Bugs & Cranks. It’s great stuff, but there is one part in particular that intrigued me as an all around Philly hater:

MM: Philadelphia fans: Passionate die-hards or Crazy, maniacal lunatics?

CH: 40% Passionate die-hards, 60% crazy, lunatics and fair-weather fans.

I knew Philly was full of passionate die-hards (see also: obnoxious douchebags), but fair-weather fans? Does Cole know that’s an insult to his own fan base? And what is really interesting is that he chose to inject that into the answer; it was not part of Michael’s question. Of course, there can’t be too many fair-weather fans in Philly seeing as all the city does is ultimately lose in every single sport they’ve ever attempted.

Also noteworthy from the interview is the overwhelming number of exclamatory statements by Cole. I counted no less than 10 of them, including one that required four exclamation marks. He’s an excitable guy, I guess.

Updates: Cole’s interviewer (meech.one) comments, “I would prolly say it’s about 70% die hard, 30% morons, but that’s pretty much the definition of a fair weather fan.” That’s better than Cole’s 40/60. And The Jaunt says I’m less likable than my brother Jamie. Agreed.

In defense of Cole, last Saturday after the Brett Myers/Padres fiasco, the only calls coming into sportstalk radio were, “Ay! I’m frickin’ done with the Phillies, you got that? This team has no heart - E! A! G! L! E! S! - Iggles! [click]”

Now after the 4 game sweep of the Metropolitans, those same people are now guaranteeing a playoff spot. I would prolly say it’s about 70% die hard, 30% morons, but that’s pretty much the definition of a fair weather fan. The same guys who were calling for Pat Burrells benching but now give him the loudest standing-O.

And obviously, any fan that peruses Philly sports websites all day long can be grouped in with the die hards.

You better not be startin’ some shit, Mottram!

Would those also be the same people who booed the drafting of McNabb, but now say things like “No. 5 is No. 1!!!!”?

It’s true though. I went to a bunch of games last year right as they were starting to get back into the pennant race. I’d say there was 6,000 people in the stands, max. A few weeks later they were almost selling out.

And don’t get me started on the Flyers.

I was just kidding with ya, bro. I love the site. But not all us Philly fans are douchebags (well, at least not ALL of the time).

I knew you were kidding, brah.

And people from Philly aren’t douchebags ALL the time, it’s mostly just any time they’re at any sporting event.
