I Believe Him Yo, I Don’t Know Why,
But I Do
By Chris Mottram | August 27, 2007

As far as public apologies go, Michael Vick’s today was as honest, sincere and redeeming as it gets. He didn’t step up to the mic and read some statement that his lawyers prepared for him. Instead, he spoke from the heart. There were tears in his eyes and honesty in what he said. MDS at the FanHouse has the entire transcript (or you can watch the video on ESPN). The most telling part, in my mind, was this bit:
“In this entire situation I never pointed the finger at anybody else. I accepted responsibility for my actions and what I did and now I have to pay the consequences for it, but in a sense I think it will help me as a person. I have a lot to think about in the next year or so.”
I’ve avoided addressing the Vick situation, mostly because it’s more played out than Half-Baked one-liners (see: this post’s headline), but someone has to defend this guy. What he did was obviously horrible, but not unforgivable. Above all, it was just completely stupid, which I believe Vick understands.
After he’s done serving his time, I look forward to him making a comeback to the NFL and once again exciting us with his mad, crazy, stupid skillz.

He never pointed the finger at anybody else but he said that he never was at the house in Virginia and even blamed his friends and family for taking advantage of his generosity. I guess it’s not pointing the finger if you don’t actually use a finger.

I thought he did pretty well there, although he gets red ink (or -2, as the kids say) for referring to himself in the third person and saying, “Through this situation I found Jesus.”

Yeah, the whole jesus bit was the only part I could’ve done with out. That, and when he referred to the press conference as an interview.

If there’s anybody who can relate to having quick feet and strong hands, it’s my Lord and Savior.
With that being said, I’m sure the third-person stuff didn’t go over too well.
