In Which I Mention Kevin Millar and Ted Williams in the Same Breath
By Chris Mottram | August 24, 2007
Kevin Millar is amazingly good at three things: singing, dancing, and getting on base at least once every game. Millar, who is totally average as a ballplayer in every way, has reached base in 50 straight games, breaking the O’s record held by Ken Singleton.
The all-time A.L. record for consecutive games reaching base is 84 set by someone named Ted William in 1949. Much like the National League itself, their record is far inferior as Barry Bonds and Duke Snider share the mark with 58 games straight in 2003 and 1954, respectively. Some further research reveals that one of these is not like the others:
- Williams’ numbers in 1949: .343 BA, .490 OBP, 194 hits, 162 walks
- Bonds’ numbers in 2003: .341 BA, .521 OBP, 133 hits, 148 walks
- Snider’s numbers in 1954: .341 BA, .423 OBP, 199 hits, 84 walks
- Millar’s numbers this season: .264 BA, .379 OBP, 93 hits, 59 walks.
Millar is one of the genuinely likable guys on an otherwise painfully frustrating team, so I hope he keeps this thing going. Although after making this post, I have a feeling the streak will be over by the end of the night.
Update: Roch Around the Clock spots Millar wearing a t-shirt in the clubhouse that reads, “I’m always on base.”

He’s gotta be wishing he was still on the Sox right about now. Not the greatest player in the world, but definitely serviceable. He deserves better.
