Bush Likes Bonds, Tabloids Not So Much
By Chris Mottram | August 8, 2007

I suppose just putting an asterisk next to “756″ would’ve been way to subtle:
“The front page of the New York Post had a banner headline of ‘756′ that was formed by syringes, a reference to allegations that Bonds used steroids. The front page of The Daily News page read: ‘King of Shame.’ The Boston Herald’s back-page headline was: ‘King Con.’ The Philadelphia Daily News’ back page had 756 with an asterisk. The headline inside read: ‘Hail Yes or Hell No.’”
I’d say they still held back a bit too much. Perhaps they could’ve photoshoped a picture of Bonds bent over with his pants down and a syringe in his ass. I’m just not sure that the “756″ in syringes gets your point across.
There was also a conversation between America’s two most beloved people when Bonds was lucky enough to get a call from Prez Bush, who had some extremely controversial and totally not obvious things to say to Barry:
“You’ve always been a great hitter and you broke a great record.”
Captivating. I mean really, why use any other adjectives when “great” just feels so … umm, what’s the word? Ah yes, great.
