Chapel Hill Fire Trucks Are Carolina Blue

I visited Chapel Hill briefly yesterday, just long enough to eat at Ye Olde Waffle Shop (not to be confused with Ye Olde Waffle House) and notice that the fire trucks are painted Carolina Blue:

The Carolina Blue fire truck tradition began in 1996 to commemorate the joint purchase of Engine 32 by the Town of Chapel Hill, UNC and UNC Hospital. Since then there have been several joint purchases of trucks and since the Carolina Blue truck was so well liked it was decided to convert the entire fleet.

My buddy Andy informs that the College Park FD does the same thing with their trucks to honor Maryland hoops, but I’m pretty sure he’s just confused.

D.C. sports fan and digital media guy that's been doing this since 2004. Once threw a football further than Chris Cooley.

How is a place with a “Ye” and an “Olde” in it’s name a shop, and not a shoppe?

I don’t know, but they make a mean biscuit. And they get bonus points for being the only place on Franklin Street that doesn’t sell Psycho T tees.

If there was a fire in Durham, would the Carolina Blue fire trucks refuse to put out the fire?

No, but I’d like to think the Durham resident would rather let it burn.

Yes, this is freaking brilliant. Build emergency vehicles that blend into the skyline. There is something seriously wrong with Chapel Hill.
