Andy’s A-11, Where Mason Is Good Again

Maryland Sports Correspondent Andy Peden’s ballot in the Atlantic 11

1. Georgetown (18-5, 7-4) — The Hoyas have won six in a row after two close games this past week. They start a tough three-game stretch with Syracuse, Marquette and UConn. Their focus right now is finishing in the top four in the Big East.
2. George Mason (19-5, 11-2) — Had a great week with two wins, including hammering ODU on Saturday. Ryan Pearson went into beast mode in the second half as Mason turned a close game into a blowout. This team is really good and now has some breathing room. They’re battling VCU for the regular-season title.
3. ODU (18-6, 9-4) — After the loss to Mason, they’ve fallen two games back in the CAA. For them to get back in the hunt, they’ll have to beat both W&M and VCU this week.
4. Richmond (18-6, 7-2) — Won two games they should win. This week they have two more, including Wednesday night at GW.
5. VA Tech (15-6, 5-4) — Tough loss to BC. Malcolm Delaney missed a critical FT and then didn’t take the last shot, both of which are surprising. They get a little time off before trying to avenge an earlier loss to Ga. Tech.
6. Maryland (15-8, 5-4) — After Duke’s performance against St. John’s, I wasn’t shocked by the result at MD. Thankfully, Wake came to town and MD quickly forgot about Duke. After a scrimmage mid-week with Longwood, MD goes on the road in a must-win game at BC.
7. VCU (19-6, 11-2) — Really bad loss at Northeastern before rallying against JMU. They really need to beat Delaware then win at least one against ODU and Mason.
8. Hampton (18-5, 8-2) — Not much to say other than they win games.
9. JMU (17-8, 7-6) — The Dukes officially have to win the CAA tournament to get into the dance after a terrible week.
10. American (16-7, 6-2) — They’re a game behind Bucknell, who they face this week.
11. Virginia (12-11, 3-6) — Somehow beat Clemson in a game that didn’t get to 100 points. They gave away a game by missing free throws (with the help of a terrible call) against Miami. They have an ugly week coming up.

D.C. sports fan and digital media guy that's been doing this since 2004. Once threw a football further than Chris Cooley.

Question: Why are Tech and ODU a part of the A-11, but not W&M?

I know we don’t much like the Steelers around these parts, but that seems like a bit large of a backlash against Mike Tomlin (class of 1995)

    William & Mary’s eligible for the A11, but they’re 6-17.

I’m not giving any points to Virginia for the rest of this season. That’s what happens when you lose to Wake Forest.

Also, whenever anyone asks why Virginia Tech counts as a team in the D.C. area, I point them here
