Tyler Clippard Is Damn Near Strasburgian

Strasburg is all the rage right now, as he should be, but let’s not forget the guy he handed a lead to in the eighth, middle reliever extraordinaire Tyler Clippard. Nats Journal shares this astounding stat:

[The Pirates swung and] missed 18 times [on Strasburg pitches last night], 43.9 percent of their swings. For perspective, the highest percentage among qualifying pitchers of swings that miss is 35.3, by Nationals reliever Tyler Clippard.

We knew Clippard is having an amazing season (eight wins, 1.62 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, .178 batting average against, 46 K in 39 IP), but to lead the league in swings that miss? His stuff is good, but it’s not THAT good, is it?

  1. I know he’s got some pitching to do before being handed the job, but how incredible would it have been if Storen came in to close and got his first save?

    That’s a 1-2-3 that should scare people.
